Managed Service Provider Chooses Kaseya to Improve IT Efficiency While Going Green

Tech Networks of Boston Deploys Kaseya IT Automation Solution to Provide Network-Level Control Over Systems’ Power Settings

ST. HELIER, JERSEY, June 16, 2008 — Kaseya - a global provider of information technology (IT) automation software for IT solution providers and public and private sector IT organizations —announced today that Tech Networks of Boston has deployed Kaseya’s IT automation solution as a key component of its energy reduction managed services offering. Long a proponent of environmentally-conscious data centers, Tech Networks of Boston will use the Kaseya solution to measure, manage and reduce the energy consumption of its customers’ systems, providing network-level control over the power settings of servers, PCs and monitors.

“PC power consumption is a major contributor to our over-burdened power grids and global warming,” said Susan Labandibar, President and CEO, Tech Networks of Boston. “By proactively regulating energy use we can dramatically reduce the amount of power our customers use, resulting in a cleaner environment and lower electricity bills. It’s win-win for everyone.”

Since its inception, Tech Networks of Boston has been involved in energy-saving programs, working with 80 Plus—an organization funded by utilities that encourages computer makers to develop energy-efficient machines—and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program that certifies computers that are 80 percent energy efficient. But even as the industry is building more energy-efficient systems, much electricity is being wasted on inactive computers. Labandibar estimates that 100 million computers worldwide are currently left running at night, costing organizations and consumers $5 to $7 billion each year. Shifting these computers into a lower-power sleep mode for 12 hours per day—as is the goal of the Tech Networks of Boston energy reduction managed service—could easily cut worldwide CO2 production by 45 million tons per year.

Tech Networks had previously looked at network power management programs that were not capable of integrating with managed services software. But she was deterred by the prospect of deploying both a managed service client and a power management client on every workstation.

Tech Networks of Boston plans to deploy Kaseya’s low-footprint agent on more than 1,600 workstations and servers throughout its customer environments—providing administrators with a single management console in which to remotely and automatically manage each system. The Kaseya management framework will help administrators automate repetitive tasks like issuing a patch, updating software or defragging a hard drive as well as eliminate time-consuming on-site visits. As a result, the MSP’s customers will receive better and more complete services more efficiently.

As part of its green computing initiative, Tech Networks of Boston will implement the Kaseya User State Management (KUSM) module to define and deploy group standards such as common desktop configuration, power settings, group printers and mapped drives. Working with Intel® vPro™ technology to power up and power down remote workstations, administrators will have the control they need to enforce any corporate social responsibility policies from a central, integrated tab in the Kaseya management console without compromising IT services or customer productivity levels.

“Kaseya’s ability to integrate power management policies with the rest of the systems management framework gives us the ability to efficiently monitor, maintain, backup, secure and now regulate power of any computer—regardless of its physical location or whether it is in use, in sleep mode or turned off,” Labandibar said. “This powerful and complete systems management framework will allow us to provide proactive managed services at an affordable price point while continuing to keep an eye on power consumption and the environment.”

Tech Networks of Boston will also leverage Kaseya’s intuitive reporting features, allowing service professionals to better communicate to customers the services they are receiving, the current status of the environment and what work is required. This will enable Tech Networks of Boston to sit down with customers and talk about business goals and IT support in a language that everyone can understand. The reports will also quantify the reduction in energy consumption and put a dollar figure on electricity savings.

“Power and cooling costs are serious concerns that both big and small organizations are dealing with every day,” said Jim Alves, executive vice president of product marketing, Kaseya. “Our integrated IT automation solution gives MSPs the tools and data they need to address these concerns with their customers and come up with a tangible power-consumption solution.”
