The Camden Council administers the London Borough of Camden, an area of 22 square kilometers in the heart of London. Camden Council is tasked with maintaining and managing a huge range of buildings, services and facilities including a large number of primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and learning centers. Overseeing IT systems management support services for more than 2,200 desktops and servers in 54 educational facilities across the Borough was a complex task for Camden Council’s team of 18 full-time engineers.

Lee Carn, Technical Team Leader at Camden Council, explains: “While schools across the Borough are not geographically distant, the inner city location meant travel to schools could take engineers as much as an hour each way for every visit. Our schools were suffering as we couldn’t attend to their problems as quickly as they needed us to, and engineer productivity was low due to time wasted traveling.”

Security threats were a primary concern: “It’s imperative that we keep the IT networks up and running to ensure productivity in the classroom. We had been affected by security breaches and viruses in the past and this resulted in networks being taken off line for as much as a week while engineers travelled between schools fire-fighting the problem.”

This reactive, ‘break/fix’ approach to IT systems management support was impacting the level of service that could be provided to schools across the Borough. Camden needed a more proactive approach to IT systems management support that would ensure potential security breaches and IT issues were identified and handled before they became a problem.

IT Automation Platform

Camden initially set out to find a solution that could handle remote patch management, to counter security vulnerabilities, but quickly discovered the Kaseya IT automation platform could deliver this plus a whole lot more. “We realized that the Kaseya IT automation platform could radically transform the way we deliver IT support services to our education establishments,” says Lee. “Through a single interface we can remotely monitor and manage the entire infrastructure, including network components, servers and desktop PCs for 54 schools. Deployment took days rather than weeks or months, so we were able to realize benefits almost immediately,” he adds.

Using Kaseya, Camden Council can offer real-time IT systems management automation to all Camden educational facilities. By placing an agent on every desktop and server they support across the 54 sites, ongoing maintenance can be carried out instantly. Constant monitoring alerts the team to problems so they can be dealt with immediately.

According to Lee, the primary benefit of deploying Kaseya has been that of improved efficiency: “We used to spend half our time traveling to and from the schools. We have also made cost savings by reducing our transport budget and delivering consistently high levels of service without having to employ more engineers. Before, if there was a critical issue, everything else was put on hold. Now, our engineers can multi-task and maximize their productivity.”

Ensuring IT security is vital in an education environment. Through IT automation, Camden’s team of engineers can respond to security incidents and emergencies more effectively. Monitoring features alert engineers to problems before they manifest themselves on-site and issues can be resolved across all education establishments simultaneously, through the integrated web interface.
