Its the End of the Year and Should Be the Start of IT Projects

start your IT projects now

December is such an odd month.  Filled with both rush and reflection, haste and homecomings, December tends to be a rush to New Year’s. December can also be a a rich opportunity for IT providers both on staff and outsourced to check off some big boxes for the organizations they serve.  The organizations YOU serve.  You are the IT pros.

As many people are looking at how to be out of the office as much as possible near the end of the year, the challenge for you is to consider the opportunity this presents.  Are there any tricky upgrades, new network projects or other disruptive changes that you’ve been either shying away from or putting off because the other departments can’t tolerate downtime? With people out for the holidays it could be the best time all year to take things offline for hardware upgrades, data center cabling, or hardware consolidation, to name a few.

Let me take the idea a little farther.  When that person in marketing is frustrated that “things just don’t seem to be working” as they are cramming the last bit of work into the Friday before they leave for Christmas break, consider how great it would be for them to see an email in the inbox while they’re out (because you know they’ll be watching emails) about some downtime and for them to smile because they see IT getting things done while they’re out.

This isn’t to say you should blow off this holiday season and spend more time in your office, but perhaps the value of deferring your time out of the office and capitalizing on others’ simultaneous absences may reap rewards far beyond the tech.  IT always seems to be in the PR game.  When things are working everyone’s happy, but when deadlines start slipping outside of IT, or people are looking for scapegoats, too often IT is front of mind for users.  The value of planning downtime when its has less impact on day to day operations builds good will far beyond the systems affected.  If the changes also ensure accounting can close the books on time and sales can get their year end reports faster you can see how big an opportunity the Holiday time of more folks out of the office (or at least less active) can be.

Start planning now….what projects can you get done before the end of the year?
