Sys Admins don’t exactly get the same appreciation as famous former presidents and prime ministers or war heroes.
However, today, July 28, 2017, is a bit different. Today is SysAdmin Day, now celebrated for the 18th consecutive year.
The creator behind the holiday is more than a bit excited, and prone to more than a bit of hyperbole. Wait… what exactly is SysAdmin Day? Oh, it’s only the single greatest 24 hours on the planet… and pretty much the most important holiday of the year. It’s also the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the heroic men and women who, come rain or shine, prevent disasters, keep IT secure and put out tech fires left and right,” the group extolled.
There are serious and semi-silly aspects to the day. First is an appreciation for these often-unsung heroes that keep our networks, devices and application working.
“Your network is secure, your computer is up and running, and your printer is jam-free. Why? Because you’ve got an awesome SysAdmin (or maybe a whole IT department) keeping your business up and running. So say IT loud; say IT proud …,” the group said.
So how do you honor all these intelligent, motivated problem solvers?
“At this point, you may be thinking, “Great. I get it. My SysAdmin is a rock star. But now what?” Glad you asked! Proper observation of SysAdmin Day includes (but is not limited to):

The SysAdmin Day web site has some (decidedly satirical) things that end users might the admin’s life better (and by better we mean worse).To refer to the admin, the site uses the name Ted (which just happens to be the celebration’s creator real first name). We are running a small sample of the many examples:
- “Make sure to save all your MP3 files on your network drive. No sense in wasting valuable space on your local drive! Plus, Ted loves browsing through 100+ GB of music files while he backs up the servers.
- Play with all the wires you can find. If you cannot find enough, open something up to expose them. After you have finished, and nothing works anymore, put it all back together and call Ted. Deny that you touched anything and that it was working perfectly only five minutes ago. Ted just loves a good mystery. For added effect, you can keep looking over his shoulder and ask what each wire is for.
- Never write down error messages. Just click OK, or restart your computer. Ted likes to guess what the error message was.
- If you get an EXE file in an email attachment, open it immediately. Ted likes to make sure the anti-virus software is working properly.
- When Ted sends you an email marked as “Highly Important” or “Action Required”, delete it at once. He’s probably just testing some new-fangled email software.
- When you have Ted on the phone walking you through changing a setting on your PC, read the newspaper. Ted doesn’t actually mean for you to DO anything. He just loves to hear himself talk.
- When your company offers training on an upcoming OS upgrade, don’t bother to sign up. Ted will be there to hold your hand when the time comes.
In the Beginning
This now yearly special day happens on each July 28th – the date never changes. It all began in the summer of 2000, created by Ted Kekatos, a system admin.
Kekatos got the idea when reading a magazine ad by HP celebrating the fact that a SysAdmin had just installed new printers and was given gifts by his end users. Kekatos has just accomplished the same feat.
