Datto SaaS Protection Update: Graph API Migration & Performance

An important update on Datto SaaS Protection

By Brent Torre, GM, Kaseya Cyber Resilience

We know recent platform changes have affected your day-to-day work. I want to give you a direct update on where Datto SaaS Protection stands, what we have already improved, and what work remains.

A few years ago, Microsoft announced that Exchange Web Services (EWS) would be deprecated effective October 1, 2026, requiring backup providers to migrate to Microsoft Graph API. To keep Microsoft 365 backups supported, we completed that migration for all customers who reauthorized their Microsoft 365 Backup instances before the deadline. Microsoft only recently reached feature parity between EWS and Graph APIs (including Online Archives support), so Datto SaaS Protection couldn’t cut over to Graph until that support arrived. Microsoft continued enhancing Graph API throughout the migration period, and we adjusted as those changes arrived.

I know many of you rely on Datto SaaS Protection every day to protect critical business data. Your feedback has been direct, and it has shaped our priorities and the velocity of our delivery.

Microsoft API migration

The Graph API migration required significant engineering work, and we found some issues along the way. Our teams began resolving them immediately. Datto SaaS Protection’s 18M+ M365 users make it one of the largest single platforms integrated via Graph, a scale Microsoft never anticipated, so we’ve mitigated several issues on our side and agreed on a path with Microsoft to support this volume going forward.

Many of the highest-priority issues are now resolved, and you may already see improvements in your environment. We continue to deploy enhancements as they are tested and validated. A final set of Graph API-related fixes will be deployed throughout October.

Performance and reliability improvements

Alongside the move to the Graph API, we dramatically improved backup performance, user experience, and overall platform reliability. These improvements are live today:

  • Up to 2x faster backup performance
  • Up to 20x faster user experience performance
  • Faster navigation and responsiveness across the platform
  • Greater operational reliability across the service with improved backup success rates

Improved scalability

We have improved the scalability and performance of the underlying Datto SaaS Protection platform through this migration, and we are bringing those benefits to all customers through the end of Q1 2027. Many customers are already seeing improved reliability as their environments scale. This work is separate from the Graph API migration and is a further investment in the future of the product.

What this means for your business

We are protecting your data throughout this work, and Datto SaaS Protection continues to back up your environment.

Depending on your environment and migration status, you may already be seeing the improvements above. As we finish the remaining migration activities and fixes, you should see continued gains for larger environments and a stronger foundation for future capabilities.

If you have not yet completed the required Microsoft 365 tenant reauthorization, please do so as soon as possible. Follow the instructions here.
