How It Works

A DRaaS provider that has your back

1

Start by backing up your mission-critical data with a Unitrends Recovery Series appliance or Unitrends Backup Software at your primary site. Get a Unitrends Cloud account for secure offsite retention and DRaaS.

2

Once you have your Unitrends Cloud contract, use your unique key to pair local backups with your dedicated cloud target. Using Backup Copy jobs, replicate essential data to the Unitrends Cloud on a schedule that matches your defined RPOs.

3

Choose the workloads and service tier (Premium, Elite, Standard or Unlimited) for your DRaaS enrollment. You'll work closely with our onboarding team to build out a business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) plan.

4

DRaaS subscriptions include automatic DR runbook testing in an isolated environment to benchmark RTOs, RPOs and app-level performance testing. Regular testing ensures your DR plan works as expected.

5

Our DRaaS team performs all monitoring and management of the cloud environment. And results from ongoing DR tests are reported to you in real time, as evidence of recoverability. In addition, you may request manual testing as needed.

6

An authorized contact at your organization can call Unitrends Support to initiate a full or partial spin-up of your enrolled workloads in the event of a disaster. Our team is ready to establish your DR environment in the cloud at a moment's notice.

7

Once spun up, we’ll give you secure network access to protected workloads in the Unitrends Cloud. We'll continue to take backups while you're repairing your main site, for seamless failback when you're ready to return to your local site.

8

Once notified that you're ready for failback, our team will ship your encrypted backup data overnight to your local site. We then tear down the cloud environment and update your DR runbook to be fully prepared for a future declaration event.

Frequently asked questions about DRaaS solutions

A disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) solution is a cloud-based service that helps organizations recover critical workloads and data after a disruption. It allows for rapid restoration of systems following an unexpected outage, reducing downtime and limiting operational impact.

Traditional disaster recovery often requires significant hardware, software and secondary-site investment to replicate infrastructure and data. With DRaaS, replication and recovery are delivered through the cloud, typically with provider-managed tooling and expertise to simplify ongoing administration.

DRaaS works by replicating critical workloads and data to a secure cloud recovery environment managed by a service provider. It starts by identifying priority systems, defining recovery targets (RTOs and RPOs) and building a personalized DR runbook for failover and restore.

Backed-up data and systems are then replicated to the cloud on a schedule aligned with stated recovery objectives. If a disaster occurs, the DRaaS provider spins up enrolled workloads in the cloud and assists with failover, helping restore data and operations quickly.

DRaaS is best suited for organizations that can’t afford extended downtime, but don’t want to build and operate a secondary site for disaster recovery. It’s a strong match for businesses running customer-facing or revenue-driving systems, teams with lean IT staff and environments that need strict recovery targets for compliance, cyber resilience or SLA requirements. DRaaS is especially valuable when diverse workloads are in play and when regular testing, documented runbooks and predictable costs are priorities.

DRaaS benefits organizations by providing a more affordable, reliable and faster alternative to handling disaster recovery in-house. Instead of investing in and maintaining a secondary site, you use a provider-managed cloud recovery environment that can scale with your needs, speed up recovery after an outage and reduce the time and effort your IT team spends on DR planning, testing and ongoing upkeep.

Key benefits include:
  • Lower costs: Avoid large upfront investments in duplicate hardware, software and facilities
  • Less operational burden: Reduce time spent maintaining, updating and testing DR infrastructure
  • Flexible scaling: Pay for what you use and expand coverage as environments grow
  • Faster recovery: Fail over to a cloud recovery environment to resume operations sooner
  • Expert support: Leverage provider DR expertise without adding headcount
