Entra ID backup refers to creating and storing secure copies of key directory objects and configurations in Microsoft. This backup data is typically stored outside the production tenant, so it can be restored if Entra ID is compromised or unavailable. It allows organizations to regain access to Microsoft services if there is a disruption.
The way Entra ID is backed up depends on the chosen solution. With Datto Backup for Microsoft Entra ID, the process begins with a full initial capture of enrolled tenants. Protected object types include users, groups, roles, service principals, devices, contacts, apps and administrative units. This data is stored as a recovery point in a secure, Kaseya-owned cloud.
Following the first full backup, incremental snapshots are taken automatically every four hours (six times per day) to record changes and create additional recovery points. When needed, admins can restore Entra ID data from any previous backup using flexible recovery options, including restores to the original tenant, an existing tenant or a newly created tenant.
Backing up Entra ID is important because it is the identity and access management engine for many Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365 and Azure. When directory objects are lost or corrupted, users can be locked out and business operations are often disrupted.
Microsoft’s shared responsibility model is another reason to back up Entra ID. While Microsoft is responsible for the underlying infrastructure of its cloud services, protecting data stored within the service remains the customer’s responsibility. As a result, an Entra ID backup and recovery solution is a key part of maintaining availability for critical directory objects and configurations.
